SAC Phase 1 Analytical Studies of Building Performance

-----

Project Title:
Modeling of Weld Fractures using the Drain Program
Sub-contractors:
Scott D. Campbell, University of California, Berkeley
Project Summary:
The objective of this report was to determine the ability of the modified DRAIN series of nonlinear structural analysis programs to allow the modeling of the cracking, and subsequent behavior of welded connections.

Modified beam-column elements were produced which contain the ability to model some aspects of the behavior of welded connections. Versions were produced for two-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis. Additionally, example problems illustating the use of the new elements, along with examples illustrating the use of the DRAIN programs for various structures, were developed and distrubuted. As part of the distribution process, an account was installed on the University of California at Berkeley computer system to allow researchers to quickly access changes in the computer code.
